Pinewood derby time! The minion’s car is called Reentry. We were talking about scorching wood art and she opted to do that with her car. Used my wife’s creme brûlée torch to make it happen. Turned out pretty well.

What’s this I hear they can no longer use powdered graphite to lube the wheels?

Fun times. Our
boy scout troop, in which I’m an adult leader, is trying some different
fund raising this year, and we are going to do a “Pint Wood Derby”, at the local brew pub down the street from where we hold our meetings. $25 - $30 gets you a car, a free pint, and we’ll have bracket racing to see which dad can build the fastest car, within the BSA regulations. We thought about doing an unlimited class, but threw that out, as we could see some guy coming in with a 5lb billet of iron with wheels on it and tearing the hell out of our track. I really hope this works, as our troop could really use some $$$ to help defray the costs of registration and some scout training we plan on doing this coming year.

We’ve thought about doing the same at work for some of our fundraisers. Releasing Delta TechOps on derby cars would be insane. We also thought about doing $5 grudge matches. Our COO, EVP and SVP are all car guys. The amount of cheating would be insane.

Oh man. I just remembered my final pine wood car, when I was a Weblos.
It was planed down to maybe a quarter inch thick with hammered flat fishing sinkers glued in along the bottom all the way up to the weight limit. The front was smoothed to a taper a little. Greased axles, wheels with burrs sanded down, and camber for less contact with the track got me first place in a 100+ scout troop.

Man the pinewood derby takes me back. The best car I ever made was named after my favorite Rush song, Red Barchetta.

It’s been a few years since my former scout ran in Pinewood Derby, so rules may have changed about lubricants, but graphite and moly/graphite were the legal axle lubricants. There is this stuff out there called NyOil that is a thin film liquid lubricant that is slicker but as far as I know is not legal.
My kid had his share of trophies in PWD, and even went to district once after an overall pack win. The secrets of winning was weight as far to the rear as possible for maximum potential energy , running only 3 wheels down to minimize wheel friction and rotational inertia , and a rail-riding alignment to prevent wobble .
